Why Accuracy Beats Speed (And Is the Faster Route)

TL;DR: At 92% accuracy you are spending roughly one keystroke in twelve undoing your own work. Pushing accuracy from 92% to 98% usually raises effective speed more than any amount of trying to type faster — and it is the faster route, not the patient one.

Most people treat accuracy as the boring half of typing: the thing you tidy up once you are fast. It is closer to the opposite. Accuracy is the cheapest speed you will ever buy, and chasing raw speed while ignoring it is why plateaus last for months.

The arithmetic of an error

An error is not one mistake. It is the wrong keystroke, plus noticing it, plus a backspace, plus the correct keystroke — and the pause while your attention shifts from typing to fixing. Call it three to four keystrokes' worth of time for one wrong letter, and more if you notice late and have to delete several characters.

So at 95% accuracy, one keystroke in twenty is wrong, and each one costs several. At 90% it is one in ten. The correction work grows quickly, which is why two typists with the same raw speed can differ enormously in how much text they actually produce.

This is also why gross WPM flatters you and net WPM does not. Gross counts everything you typed; net counts what survived. The gap between them is your error tax, and if it is wide, that gap is where your next improvement is hiding.

Why accuracy problems feel like speed problems

When you type near your limit, error rate rises sharply — not gradually. Push a little past what your motor control can handle and accuracy falls off a cliff, so you spend more time correcting, so your net speed drops even though your fingers are moving faster. It feels like you are trying hard and getting nowhere, because you are.

The plateau most people describe at 40–60 WPM is usually this. Not a ceiling on speed — a ceiling on the speed at which they can stay accurate, which they keep trying to break by going faster.

The fix, which feels wrong

Slow down until you are consistently at 97–98%, and stay there for a week or two. Not one session — long enough for the habit to change. Then stop restraining yourself.

Speed comes back higher than where you left it, for two reasons. You are no longer spending keystrokes on corrections, and — more importantly — you have stopped rehearsing errors. Every mistyped word you correct and move past is a small amount of practice at typing it wrong. Accuracy training is partly about not training the wrong thing.

This is genuinely uncomfortable, because your visible number gets worse before it gets better. That is the cost, and it is a few weeks at most.

Not all errors are equal

Once you are looking at accuracy properly, the useful question stops being how many errors and becomes which. Errors cluster:

  • A few specific keys. Usually the ones your weakest fingers reach for — often the outer keys struck by the little fingers.
  • Specific transitions. Particular letter pairs that need an awkward finger sequence. These feel like single mistakes but are really one bad movement pattern.
  • Late-test errors. If accuracy is fine for thirty seconds and collapses after two minutes, that is stamina, not technique, and the fix is longer practice sessions rather than more drills.

Consistency, the metric nobody watches

Two typists can average 60 WPM very differently: one steady at 58–62, the other swinging between 35 and 90. The steady one is more accurate, more reliable under pressure, and has a much higher ceiling, because erratic speed means the fast stretches are outrunning their control.

What to actually do this week

  1. Take a test and note accuracy, not just WPM.
  2. If accuracy is under 96%, set a target speed roughly 10 WPM below your usual and hold it.
  3. Practise 15 minutes daily at that speed, prioritising clean runs over fast ones.
  4. Drill your weakest characters specifically rather than typing general text.
  5. After two weeks, let speed go and take a normal test. It will be higher.
